Login Screen
You can login to the network from a different computer on campus. You can login to the Novell network from any SMUHSD Networked computer to access your files, software, or printer from anywhere on campus,

• To locate the Novell Login dialog box, click on the Start button, choose Programs, choose the Novell option, and then click on the Novell Login option.

• Click on the Advanced button in the bottom right of the dialog box. The bottom of the login screen should expand showing three fields: Tree, Context and Server

Novell Login - Expanded

• In the NDS tab area, the Tree field should read "SMUHSD". You will have to choose the Context and Server settings appropriate for you.

• To select your Context, click on the button to the right of the context field area. At each of the schools in the SMUHSD, there are contexts created for all of the different types of users.

Anatomy of the Context: In the SMUHSD Novell system there are four fields that make up the context that allow a user to log into the network. Each field is separated by a period (.) and serves a particular purpose. The fields in the context go from the specific to the general. If you want to think of the context as a tree, like Novell does, the field on the far left are the leaves and you would move in towards the trunk. We will look at each field in the context for the SMUHSD, starting from the left.

  • The first field is the User type. If the user is a teacher, this will be 'TCH' if the user is a student, this will be 'STU."

  • The second field is the larger group the user belongs to. For all teachers and students, this should be "IN" for 'instructional.'

  • The third field is the school site the user is assigned to.
Aragon - ahs
Burlingame - bhs
Capuchino - chs
Hillsdale - hhs
Mills - mhs
Peninsula - phs
San Mateo - smhs

  • The fourth field is the tree, which was discussed earlier, and it is the largest or most general grouping. For all computers connected to the network, this should be "SMUHSD."

  • Using the information from above, the context for a student at Burlingame High School would be 'stu.in.bhs.smuhsd'

Server: To select your Server, click on the button to the right of the Server field area. Each school has several servers, but in most instances, you would only be concerned with the 'instructional' servers. At each site there is an 'in1' or teacher server and 'in2' or student server. An example of this would be a teacher at Hillsdale High School would typically log onto the 'hhs_in1' server.

• Now enter your username and password and click OK. If you have any problems logging into the Novell Network, please see your Technology Coordinator.
